The Classical Historian Family
John and Zdenka De Gree live with their six children in San Clemente, California (Their oldest is out of the house). After working in private and public school education for over twenty years, John realized the great need in American society to promote independent and critical thinking through open and thoughtful discussion of history. Zdenka realized that nowhere could she find fun games that taught history. The Classical Historian teaches through games and creative curriculum . Our materials are inspired by the best that is offered in the Western tradition of education: openness, analysis, healthy competition in games, respect towards opposing viewpoints, recognition of an absolute truth, and academic honesty.
John earned his Masters of Arts in Humanities from Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Zdenka her MBA from Charles University, Prague, Czechoslovakia. After marrying, John and Zdenka founded a windsurfing school in Turkey and taught German tourists on the Mediterranean Sea. For four years, they lived in the Czech Republic, where they started their family. At Charles University, John studied World and Czech history and taught English and History in various locations. Returning to the U.S.A. in 1996, John earned his teaching credential and has taught in a public middle school English and History for the past sixteen years. In 2007, John received National Board Certification, awarded to 1% of America's teachers. His newest textbook, Detective World History, Ancient and Medieval World Civilizations, Book One, published by The Critical Thinking Company, has recently won the Tillywig Brain Child Award.
