Pre-K Through Grade 5, The Grammar Stage
For pre-k through grade 5 (ages 3-11) we recommend The Classical Historian Memory Games and The Classical Historian Go Fish Games.  The Classical Historian Memory Games require no reading, practice visual and spatial memory, and give the child an image of the history he will be studying in later years.  The Classical Historian Go Fish Games teach basic skills of history (the grammar of history) visual memory of important historical images, and social skills of playing in a small group.  The Go Fish Games also include directions for three additional games that can be played with the same cards.  These additional games practice chronology, and association by continent and by empire or civilization.

Grade 6 Through 12, The Dialectic and Rhetoric Stage
We recommend Teaching the Socratic Discussion in History DVD curriculum and  The Take a Stand! series books for grades 6-12 (ages 12-18).  Students are ready to learn the tools of the historian, engage in the Socratic discussion, and write analytical essays.  Due to the subject matter, the age of the students, and because we think the acquiring of historical information should occur chronologically, we recommend the following Take a Stand books for grades 6-8:

Take a Stand! Ancient Civilizations
Take a Stand! Medieval Civilizations
Take a Stand! American History from the American Revolution up to 1914

It is very possible for a student to use the Medieval Civilizations book with a 6th grader, or the Ancient Civilizations book with an 8th grader, and no harm will come from this.  And, it is possible to use any one of these books with a high school aged student.  However, we have found through experience and research that the preceding order makes sense and works.

The history of man starts with ancient civilizations, continues with medieval civilizations, and the United States of America began as a child of the early modern ages at the end of the medieval ages.

We make the following recommendations for grades 10-12:

Take a Stand! Modern World History
Take a Stand! Modern American History
Take a Stand! American Democracy and Economics

We feel that the materials taught in these books are more appropriate for older students because of their subject matter, academic rigor, and close connection to current debates in the public sphere.  For example, in the modern world, students are confronted with the ideas of Karl Marx and Adam Smith.  Both of these works are too challenging to be read by middle school students.  And, just before the age of voting begins at 18, students will be more interested to discuss the various economic systems or philosophies of the world, and the role that religion plays in society.

Each of these “high school” books begins with a look at how the past influenced the modern ages.  The Take a Stand! Modern World History, for example, begins with the students analyzing how the ancient and medieval world affected the modern world.  This look to the past helps the student bridge the preceding ages to our current one.

What about grade 9?  We recommend that at grade 9, the student chooses one to two topics of history and becomes an expert at this topic.  He should devote his year of study to reading primary source documents, historical novels, and paying attention to how this topic is related to current events.  Or, the student may go directly to a history book and “skip” 9th grade, if he is a home schooled.

"I absolutely LOVE the critical thinking aspects of the curriculum.   Implementing critical thinking into the reading and discussion of history is a powerful tool to help our children understand what they are reading as  well as form an opinion and knowledge that they will be able to use in many situations in life."  Dina, California
