American Revolution to 1914 Online Class
History and the Socratic Discussion for Home School
This is a unique history and critical thinking class for homeschoolers that teaches classical history through analysis of history, research, and the Socratic discussion. Students first learn the tools of the historian then apply them to the subject content. Students will read primary sources and history texts and engage in the Socratic discussion. As the meaning of history is open to debate, our course shows students how to use logic and the search for truth to find the best interpretation of historical events.
Frequency of Classes: Class meets once per week, 30 times for one year.
Ages: Grades 6-8
Fifth graders may enroll, but the reading may be too challenging. Ninth graders may enroll, but the reading may be too easy.
Required Materials:
1. A History of the United States and its People, by Edward Eggleston
2. Take a Stand! American Revolution to 1914
3. A Patriot’s History Reader
4. American History Go Fish Game
History Content:
Students will learn the independent and critical thinking skills specific to the study of history. They will apply these skills to the open-ended, analytical questions in the following topics:
1. The American Revolution
2. The Declaration of Independence
3. Effects on France
4. The U.S. Constitution
5. Founding the Republic
6. The U.S. as a Young Nation
7. Westward Expansion
8. The Civil War, Causes
9. The Civil War, Compare and Contrast
10. Reconstruction
11. Immigration
12. Industrialization
13. World Power
Socratic Discussion:
Students will engage the teacher and fellow classmates in the Socratic Discussion, as it pertains to the study of history. Students will learn how search for the truth in honest dialogue. Students will develop strong speaking and listening skills.
First Class Reading Assignment? There is no required reading for the first class. All homework for the year will be given during the class. If a student misses class, he can download the class and watch the recorded version online, anytime of the week.
