This product consists of a workbook and DVDs.
The program goes over following content:
1.    The Grammar of History
2.    The Tools of the Historian
3.    How to Research and Read History Texts
4.    The Socratic Discussion
5.    Analytical Writing in History

This is not a history content curriculum but a teaching and learning approach that is essential to teach your child how to be a critical and independent thinker, speaker, and writer in history.  This DVD course does not cover content but teaches how to approach all history and shows the teacher how to teach the tools of the historian and how to lead a Socratic discussion in history.

If you want your student to become an independent thinker and an effective communicator, this is the program for you. After this DVD course, the teacher will know how to instruct students how to distinguish between fact and opinion, make good historical judgment, analyze primary or secondary sources, use quotes effectively in argumentation, how to paraphrase historical text, how to analyze and answer interpretive questions in history, how to conduct research, how to participate in a Socratic Discussion in History, and how to write analytical essays including: Writing an Outline, Writing a Rough Draft, and Revising. The complete DVD course includes over four complete hours of instructional taping, 13 class lessons, and course booklet. If you are a parent or teacher who has never learned history with a classical approach, this is an excellent product for you as a training course.  Give your child the tools to understand and compete in a modern society by preparing him with essential thinking, speaking, and writing skills.

As part of this curriculum, the teacher may become certified to teach in a co-op setting using the Classical Historian materials and have their courses advertised on the Classical Historian website.  Email John De Gree for more information.

I absolutely LOVE the critical thinking aspects of the curriculum.  Too few curricular address the idea of critical thinking skills.  There is much written for the children to memorize and recount at the appropriate times, but are they understanding what they are reading?  Implementing critical thinking into the reading and discussion of history is a powerful tool to help our children understand what they are reading as well as form an opinion and knowledge that they will be able to use in many situations in life.   I also love the discussion and multi-age aspects of the curriculum.  Being able to have discussions around the dinner table with family are some of the most important times you will have will your children.  These are very good learning opportunities that are disappearing from too many families today.  The children are able to read the material and discuss it at their level; they will understand the material better with discussion and help teach each other at the same time.  This would also work wonderfully in a homeschool co-op setting!   I have been looking at a number of different social studies programs for the middle and older grades and am very excited to come across Take a Stand!  I am anxious to use it in my homeschool as well as recommend it to others.
