American History Online Course

This is a unique history, critical thinking, and Socratic discussion class. Students first learn the tools of the historian then apply them to history. Using primary and secondary source materials, pupils will engage in Socratic discussions, answering open-ended questions. As the meaning of history is open to debate, our teachers instruct how to use logic and evidence to find the best interpretation of historical events. For those enrolling in the optional assessment and writing element, students will write argumentative essays. For more information scroll below.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this course, students will learn how to develop arguments that are grounded in historical evidence. Then, they will debate and discuss complex issues from throughout American history. The course textbook will introduce students to the great ideas, people, and events that shaped America. In addition to the textbook, students will read from primary sources and conduct their own research into important issues.

WHAT TO EXPECT

 This is a unique history and critical thinking class that teaches history through the Socratic discussion.  Students first learn the tools of the historian and then apply these critical thinking skills to history content. In addition to the textbook, students will analyze primary sources and historical texts. Since the meaning of history is open to debate, this course shows students how to use logic to find the best interpretation of historical events.
​Recordings of each course are posted on the website the day of the course. Course recordings include the Power Point and all audio. No student faces are recorded.

  ADD-ON WRITING

Our Writing class may be added in addition to the online course. After the first class has taken place, Writing Students will receive an email with information how to access our Online Writing in History course. After watching this two-hour video course and following along in a book we provide as a download, students complete a one-paragraph essay based on course content and email the essay to the teacher as an attachment. The teacher then suggests how the student can rewrite the essay. Over the course, the teacher assigns essays based on the history discussions taking place during class. The teacher will assign essays and set due dates throughout the course. Students write at least one essay every three weeks. Additional writing is available for students who request more. Students begin writing one-paragraph essays and move up to writing five-paragraph-or-more essays. All communication between student and teacher occurs via email.

 REQUIREMENTS

DAILY WORK/HOMEWORK
Students are expected to read about three to four hours per week in preparation for the class discussion. There is no required work before the first day of class. Each homework assignment is posted on the last slide of the Power Point presentation of each class. If a student misses the assignment for whatever reason, it is available on the course recording.

CLASS PARTICIPATION
100% of the grade is based on class participation. All interactions in class will be civil and respectful. Reasoned debate requires polite disagreement.  Students who do the reading and participate in class will fulfill the course requirements. Students are required to have their cameras on during class and are expected to engage in discussion. Please have the student sitting in a quiet room with no distractions. 

MISSED CLASSES
If students miss class for whatever reason, they are responsible for watching the recording on the Classical Historian website.  Students must watch the recording to learn the homework assignment.  

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
All classes take place using Zoom technology. A computer with a good internet connection is needed. On August you will receive an email from Zdenka De Gree (zdenka@classicalhistorian.com)  explaining how to log in to the class and how to access the course recordings.

Adam De Gree
​is a Philosophy graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara and holds a Master of Arts in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Prague’s CEVRO Institute. His research covers the intersection of aesthetics and economic theory. He and his wife Tessa recently welcomed their first daughter, Amália, to their home in the historic city of Prague, Czech Republic. Adam is available to parents and students at adam@classicalhistorian.com
